THE ELBOW
AN INTEGRATED MULTISTRUCTURAL SYSTEM

Tanya Bell-Jenje
BSc (physio) UCT; MSc (physio) Wits

This one-day course examines the multistructural complexity of the elbow joint, as well as its integrated relationship with the upper quarter, particularly the wrist, shoulder, cervical & cervico-thoracic spine.

The Applied Clinical Anatomy & Biomechanics of the elbow is taught. Emphasis is placed on Lateral & Medial epicondylagia, Postero-lateral instability and the Throwing Elbow. The causes and difficulties in management of the Stiff Elbow are reviewed in detail, as this can be one of the physio’s greatest challenges. A critical review of current (2010) research into different treatments techniques and trends is included.

The practical sessions include a thorough assessment and examination of the 3-joint elbow complex, the related soft tissues & neurodynamics. Treatment techniques to the elbow, cervical spine and shoulder are demonstrated and practiced. These include new combined techniques that simultaneously target different structures, addressing the multistructural nature of most chronic elbow pain.

Finally, a detailed rehabilitation program is described for tendinopathies, the throwing elbow & the elbow post-operatively.

The course participant receives detailed course notes & a thorough elbow assessment, designed by the presenter as part of her MSc dissertation.

It is recommended that course participants revise the clinical anatomy of the elbow joint complex prior to attending this course.
